FAQs: Free Baggage Allowance and extra luggage charges

In India, Air India gives highest free baggage allowance of 30 kg (checked in luggage) for economy class tickets. This includes 5 kg extra for limited period as promotional offer. Vistara provides 20 kg of checked free baggage allowance for "Economy Flexi" class tickets on domestic routes.
In India, Air India gives highest free hand baggage allowance of 8 kg for economy class tickets.
It depends on how much excess baggage you are planning to carry. Usually pre booking is cheaper on per kg basis. But pre booking has to be done for a fixed slab of weightage. For example Indigo has slabs of 3kg, 5kg, 10kg, 20kg. In pre booking you will be paying @400 Rs per kg. But at airport checkin counter you will be charged @500 per kg for excess weight. So, if you have more than 2.4 kg of excess luggage but less than 3 kg, it makes sense to pre book the excess baggage for 3kg slab. You can save around 100-300 rs.
